1 Chronicles 22:16

Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee.

The gold and the silver and the brass or bronze and the iron for the temple had been made ready in abundance beyond numbering through David under the Lord's provision. After that preparation David charged Solomon to arise and actively carry out the temple work with the Lord with him. David's experience and gathered provision could support and encourage Solomon, but the younger, newer worker was to carry out the work while the work and its resources continued, so responsibility passed from the older one who had gathered to the one who was to build.

God has different sets of workmen for different branches and stages of His cause, and when those first called have carried the work as far as their ability allows, He calls and qualifies other men to come in and carry it farther and lift the standard higher. Older, weary and worn men of large experience should therefore advise, counsel and encourage younger men. They must not belittle them, dictate just how the work should be done, hinder them, circumscribe the work, or block progress and stand blocking the wheels when helpers take hold in a little different way. They do not see the work in all its bearings nor discern its increasing demands and opening providences, and if responsibility rests wholly with them the work will diminish and be retarded.

Solomon already had sufficient God-provided facilities and materials to build the temple and could have built it with what God had provided, but he departed from God by choosing to go to other nations to secure facilities for the work. The Lord desires to encircle His people with protection, bless them above all other people, and preserve them in purity while they remain closely connected with Him. If they depart from Him they will share the sorrows of Solomon, who was favored with wisdom, riches and honor on condition that he walk in the ways of the Lord and keep His statutes and His judgments.
