1 Chronicles 22:2
And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God.
David's gathering of the foreigners residing in Israel and appointing stonecutters to shape dressed stone for God's house was a large-scale preparation for temple building. The actual construction was not assigned to David himself but was to pass to Solomon his son. David's appointed role was to advise, counsel, and encourage Solomon from his own broad experience, while the younger man was to perform the work.
This arrangement reveals God's established order of providing different groups of workers for the different branches and stages of His cause. When those first called have carried the work as far as their given ability allows, the Lord in His providence calls and qualifies additional men to join them in order to advance it further and raise the standard higher. Older workers whose minds have grown weary and worn, who fail to grasp the greatness of the work in all its aspects and who fail to keep pace with its unfolding providences and growing demands, must not obstruct these helpers. They must not narrow the work, dictate precisely how it is to be done, or retain all responsibility in their own hands, for doing so would weaken the strength and efficiency of the work and hold it back.
