Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David.
David gathered extensive supplies for the house of God, including cedar timber in great abundance, although he had been told by the Lord that he himself was not to erect that building and that the task would fall to Solomon his son. His gathering was preparation rather than construction, laying up material for a work another was appointed to perform. His rightful role, in view of his broad experience, was to advise, counsel, and encourage Solomon, while the actual labor of building belonged to the younger man. In this way the verse shows that when older workers have carried the work as far as they are able, they are not to obstruct those whom God is training to continue it nor to prescribe exactly how it must be done, but are to allow them to take hold of it in their own different manner, advance it further, and raise the standard still higher.
