1 Chronicles 23:11
And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their father’s house. And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their father’s house.
The reckoning belongs to the history of David in 1 Chronicles 21-23, which closes in the prosperous years of his reign. As part of Chronicles, the book of Records of Events dealing especially with the kingdom of Judah, it centers on Judah rather than the northern kingdom. It takes knowledge of the preceding books for granted and supplies new and important facts left out of Samuel and Kings.
Its reckoning according to the father's house was preserved to furnish legal proof of hereditary descent after the exile. By that proof the land could be assigned to its hereditary owners and the temple service taken up by those whose hereditary duty it was. Its genealogical reckoning shows that God is particular and that a faithful record of each soul is kept in the books of heaven.
