1 Chronicles 23:19

Of the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

The listing of Hebron's four sons belongs to Chronicles, which in the Jewish canon is one book named Words of Days, Records of Events. Its first part parallels the last part of Samuel, dealing more fully with the kingdom of Judah while Kings deals more fully with the northern ten-tribe kingdom. The verse stands in chapters 21-23, the closing portion covering the prosperous years of David's reign.

It falls within chapters 21 to 25. There it is one of the many genealogies that supply what was left out of Samuel and Kings, taking knowledge of the preceding books for granted while giving new and important facts. It lists Hebron's sons in their order as strict legal proof of hereditary descent of the kind needed after the exile, when the land had to be assigned to its hereditary owners and the temple service had to be taken up by those whose hereditary duty it was. As part of the genealogical lists, it shows God is particular in directing His people to keep record of genealogies and in keeping a faithful record of each soul in the books of heaven.
