1 Chronicles 23:32
And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD. And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.
The verse belongs to the closing chapters that establish worship under David, record preparation for building the temple, and record the accession of Solomon to the throne under special blessing. It lies in the portion covering chapters 21 through 25. It reflects the need for hereditary records so that temple service could be resumed by those whose family descent gave them that duty.
It describes the work assigned to the Levites after the temple was built, to attend the priests in the sanctuary service by keeping the charge of the tabernacle and the holy place and assisting the sons of Aaron in the service of the house. Their duties included preparing the showbread, often leading the singing, collecting the tithe, and doing a large amount of other work connected with the service. In David's time they began this sanctuary service at twenty years of age, and at fifty they were released from arduous duties while still retaining charge of the work. Their work was largely confined to the court and typified the work of the present-day gospel ministry.
