1 Chronicles 23:7

Of the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei.

The line records a branch of the Levitical family tree, identifying Laadan and Shimei as the Gershonites. It stands within the genealogies and the history of David preserved in Chronicles. That larger narrative details David's ordering of worship and his gathering of materials and organization for the temple before Solomon succeeded him on the throne.

Chronicles presumes the reader already knows the earlier books of Scripture. It adds new and important material omitted from Samuel and Kings. It says scarcely anything concerning the northern kingdom.

The genealogical list served as legal evidence of hereditary descent. Such proof was required after the exile. At that time land was restored to its hereditary owners and temple service was resumed by those to whom it belonged by hereditary duty.
