1 Chronicles 24:20

And the rest of the sons of Levi were these: Of the sons of Amram; Shubael: of the sons of Shubael; Jehdeiah.

1 Chronicles 24:20 belongs to the account of the arrangements for worship under David, during the preparations for the temple that Solomon would build. It names Shubael, a descendant of Amram through Levi, and Jehdeiah among the sons of Shubael. Such genealogical lists preserved proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile to assign land and restore hereditary duties in temple service. The chapter records the organization of the priests and Levites into twenty-four courses for service, assigned by lot.

The courses served by rotation, with regular changes that sent many workers out from Jerusalem into the country to serve among the people. The eighth course was Abijah, called Abia in the New Testament; Zacharias belonged to that priestly course, and his wife Elizabeth also descended from Aaron. The twenty-four priestly courses provide the pattern for the twenty-four elders who assist Christ in His heavenly ministry. The chapter is one of the Bible's instructions and examples for casting lots, showing that the faithful cast lots with reference to God and His interpretation, since the disposing of the lot belongs to the Lord.
