1 Chronicles 24:22

Of the Izharites; Shelomoth: of the sons of Shelomoth; Jahath.

The verse names Shelomoth among the Izharites and Jahath among the sons of Shelomoth, preserving a priestly family genealogy within the larger list of courses. Such genealogical records established hereditary descent and supported the assignment of duties in the temple service. The verse belongs to the organizing of the Levites' service, which divided priests and their attendants into courses for rotating service and for sending workers among the people throughout Israel.

The chapter's record of courses places Abijah, called Abia in the New Testament, eighth in order, and identifies Zacharias as belonging to that course. The twenty-four courses of priests appointed for service correspond to the twenty-four elders in Revelation 4. The assignments in this passage were determined by casting lots with reference to God and His interpretation, trusting that the whole disposing of the lot is of the Lord.
