1 Chronicles 24:26

The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi: the sons of Jaaziah; Beno.

1 Chronicles 24:26 belongs to the closing history of David's reign, giving one detail of his plans for the service of the house of God. It belongs to the account of David's arrangements for the worship of God and the temple service he prepared before Solomon became king.

The verse records descendants in the family of Merari, naming Mahli, Mushi, Jaaziah, and Beno. This kind of genealogical record belonged to the hereditary lists needed after the exile to establish who could inherit land and perform temple service.

The chapter organizes priestly service into courses, as part of a wider arrangement that assigned Levites and priests work connected with the sanctuary. The division was made by casting lots into twenty-four courses. Casting lots was always done by the faithful with reference to God and His interpretation, because the lot is cast into the lap but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord, and the chapter stands as Bible instruction and instance of that practice.

In this order Abijah, also called Abia, was eighth, which explains the priestly course to which Zacharias belonged. The rotation sent laborers from Jerusalem to serve among the people throughout the kingdom, while keeping them connected with the work at Jerusalem. The twenty-four courses of priests appointed for service correspond to the twenty-four elders in Revelation 4.
