1 Chronicles 24:30

The sons also of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers.

The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth, and they were reckoned as sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers. The verse stands in the closing history of David's reign as part of his plans and arrangements for the service of the house of God. It belongs to the account of establishing worship under David and preparing for the temple.

The chapter sets the priestly and Levitical families in order in twenty-four courses for service at the sanctuary, to serve in turn. The division into courses was made by lot. Casting lots in this way was one of the Bible's instructions and instances of the practice, done by the faithful with reference to God and His interpretation, because the lot is cast into the lap but its whole disposing is of the Lord. The courses rotated workers between Jerusalem and service among the people throughout the kingdom. The eighth course was Abijah, called Abia in the New Testament, to which Zacharias belonged, while his wife Elizabeth also was descended from Aaron. The twenty-four courses of priests appointed for service correspond to the twenty-four elders in Revelation 4.
