1 Chronicles 26:14

And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.

The Hebrew word goh-rahl is rendered as lot in this verse, as in other Old Testament instances where the same word is so translated. In this place it means the portion or outcome assigned by casting lots to determine duties or positions. The eastward assignment and the northward assignment illustrate that meaning, for lots were cast to fix which gate service fell to each. That casting was a means of determining an assignment under Providence.

It does not here mean an inherited possession or territory. It is the result of casting lots to assign a duty or position, not a land inheritance. This use shows that the same Hebrew word in Daniel 12:13 means Daniel's place in the judgment of the righteous dead. There he stands in the person of his Advocate, rather than receiving a land inheritance or rising in a resurrection at the end of the 1335 days.
