1 Chronicles 26:29

Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges.

Chenaniah and his sons, of the Izharites, were set apart to the outward business over Israel as officers and judges. Their charge lay outside the immediate sanctuary service, extending to civil and judicial duties among the people. This appointment belonged to a broader ordering in which Levites ministered beyond Jerusalem throughout the whole land, on both the western and the eastern sides of the Jordan.

In that wider arrangement the Levites acted as officers and judges and as supervisors of both the business belonging to the Lord and the affairs belonging to the king. Within the same ordering the Hebronites were placed in oversight of these responsibilities among the tribes. Together the Izharite and Hebronite assignments show a distributed Levitical service that joined religious oversight with civil administration across Israel.
