1 Chronicles 26:31
Among the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even among the Hebronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of Gilead.
The passage stands within the larger record of David ordering the worship of God and laying groundwork for the house of God to be built. In the fortieth year of his reign a search was made among the Hebronites, with Jerijah as chief according to the generations of the fathers, and at Jazer of Gilead mighty men of valour were found among them. Those Levites were appointed to service extending beyond Jerusalem into the wider affairs of Israel, embracing both religious duties and civil administration, the matters of God and the matters of the king.
