Of the Levites, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel: of the Aaronites, Zadok:
This chapter belongs to the account of David's arrangements for worship and preparation for the temple. The verse identifies Zadok as an Aaronite priest descended through Eleazar, one of Aaron's sons, and thereby connects him with the Aaronite priestly line. At that time the two branches of Aaron's house each had a high priest, for Zadok of the family of Eleazar remained in charge of the wilderness tabernacle at Gibeon, while Abiathar, a descendant of Ithamar of the house of Eli, was placed over the work at Jerusalem. When Solomon deposed Abiathar because of his design upon the throne, the house of Eli was cut off entirely from the priesthood in fulfillment of Samuel's prediction, leaving Zadok alone as head of the Aaronic family.
