1 Chronicles 27:7

The fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The verse stands in the final chapters of 1 Chronicles, which concern the establishment of worship under David, his preparations for building the temple, and Solomon's accession to the throne. It belongs to a list of captains appointed over successive months, recognizing a year of twelve months. Each monthly course was part of David's regular army divisions of twenty-four thousand men serving in rotation, with the fourth month's course under Asahel the brother of Joab and afterward his son Zebadiah.

Including this regular army in the census total in 1 Chronicles 21:5 may explain why that total is higher than the figure in 2 Samuel 24:9, the regular army being somewhat smaller at that time. Taken together with the Bible's thirty-day month, the twelve-month scheme supports a year of 360 days for calculating prophetic time.
