1 Chronicles 27:9

The sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The verse stands in the closing chapters of 1 Chronicles, which describe the establishment of worship under David, his preparations for the temple, and Solomon's accession to the throne. It names Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite as the captain for the sixth month, in command of a regular standing-army course of twenty-four thousand men, one of twelve such monthly courses set out in 1 Chronicles 27:1-15.

The system of twelve monthly courses shows the year was reckoned as twelve months. The twelve courses together amounted to a little less than 270,000 men at the time. That regular force is included in the census total of Israel and Judah in 1 Chronicles 21:5 but is left out of the total in 2 Samuel 24:9, accounting for the 270,000-man difference between the two records.
