1 Chronicles 28:2
Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: As for me, I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building:
David cherished in his heart a deep desire to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool of God. He had not only desired it but had prepared materials and made ready for the building. His preparations were extensive, gathering in advance what was needed for the construction of the Lord's temple.
By the Lord's command, however, the actual work of building was not to be his own, but was assigned to his son Solomon to carry out. David's remaining part was therefore to place his experience at Solomon's service, to advise and counsel and encourage the younger man in the task. The divine direction that Solomon should build was joined to God's promise to establish Solomon's kingdom if he remained faithful to God's commandments.
