1 Chronicles 28:3
But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood. But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood.
David sincerely desired to build a house for God's name, and the Lord answered that desire with the command that Solomon, whom He had chosen, would build it instead. God did not permit David to build the house for His name because David had been a man of war and had shed blood. God chose Solomon, David's son, to build the house instead, assigning the temple-building work to him rather than to his father.
David still prepared for the temple and gathered materials for it, though he himself was not to build it. His experience enabled him to advise, counsel, and encourage Solomon, while Solomon was responsible for carrying out the building work. In this way the verse shows that God may assign a work to a younger successor even when an older worker has prepared for it.
The chapter containing the verse is important to God's people in every age as part of a charge about appointing dependable people for sacred responsibilities. A person's best intentions may not be God's plans, yet God blesses and uses those who devote themselves and what they have to His glory, giving them another service when He refuses their desire.
