1 Chronicles 28:4

Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:

The Lord God of Israel chose David before all his father's house to be king over Israel forever, selecting Judah to be ruler, then David's family within Judah, then David himself from among his father's sons to rule over all Israel. That choosing set the kingship inside God's theocratic government over His people. The verses that follow this declaration name Solomon as the son chosen to succeed David, and they make the blessing and the continuance of Solomon's kingdom conditional upon obedience to God's commandments and judgments.

This declaration belongs to David's charge concerning the temple, in which David desired to build the house of God and made extensive preparations for it, yet the work of building was assigned to his son Solomon. David's own experience fitted him to advise and encourage Solomon, while Solomon as the younger man was to carry the work forward to completion. The charge and the arrangements set forth in the chapter remain important in every age, showing that responsibilities in God's service are to be entrusted to appointed persons of genuine experience and dependable character who help prepare a people for sacred service.
