1 Chronicles 29:15

For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.

Human life on earth is brief and temporary, lived before God as strangers and temporary sojourners and guests whose days pass like a shadow. As all fathers and ancestors were, so present people are without lasting home on earth, and none abides or remains here permanently. That continuity binds generation to generation in the same passing condition, with no permanence belonging to anyone on earth.

In David's prayer at the offering for the temple, this confession of brevity expresses humility and the recognition that the people themselves belong to God. All things and possessions come from Him and are only entrusted to people during their short earthly lives. What is given for the temple therefore only gives back what has already been received from Him. Applied to daily stewardship, the money people hold is not ultimately their own but belongs to God and should remain available for His work.
