1 Chronicles 29:19
And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision. And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision.
The verse is David's prayer asking God to give Solomon his son a perfect heart — whole and faithful, wholehearted, upright and devoted. It is a request for an undivided, upright heart wholly committed to God.
That heart is needed to keep God's commandments, His testimonies, and His statutes, and to do all these things. Obedience in full, remaining faithful and devoted to every divine requirement, is its purpose. That same heart is also needed to carry out the work of building the temple palace for which David himself had made provision and preparation.
The request shows David's conviction that Solomon's obedience and the temple-building task both depended on God's help. Solomon's faithfulness and success, and the completion of the entrusted task, are thereby placed in God's hands. Obedience is essential to the task entrusted to him. The prayer reflects David's concern that Solomon remain faithful, avoid wrongdoing, and faithfully fulfill his responsibility as Israel's leader. The prayer links Solomon's obedience and the completion of the temple with the people's willing worship. It asks God to keep their thoughts devoted to Him, to preserve their devotion to Him, and to prepare their hearts toward Him. In its setting Israel is urged to keep and seek God's commandments.
