1 Chronicles 29:2

Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.

David prepared with all his might an abundance of costly materials for building and decorating the house of God, including gold for things of gold, silver for things of silver, bronze, iron, wood, onyx stones, set stones, glistening stones of diverse colors, all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. The provision was for the house of God and not for a human palace, for the house for the ark as the symbol of God's presence. It reflected his deep affection for God's house and his cherished plan from the very opening of his reign to erect a temple to the Lord.

Though David himself would not build the temple because God had assigned the building to Solomon, he showed no less zeal and earnestness in the work. He devoted his resources and effort to gathering and preparing, and by that preparation he advanced the work that another would carry out. The valuable treasures he had collected were to be entrusted and committed to Solomon and to others, for other hands must build. With his experience he could advise, counsel, and encourage his son, while Solomon as the younger man carried out the task.

Beyond what he had already prepared, David also gave generously from his own wealth and treasury. By that liberality he set an example that moved the people to contribute willingly. They brought willing freewill offerings of valuable materials for the temple in Jerusalem, special gifts in addition to regular and systematic contributions in support of God's service.
