1 Chronicles 29:4
Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal: Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal:
The verse records three thousand talents of gold of Ophir and seven thousand talents of refined silver set aside to overlay the walls of the temple buildings. The gold and silver were David's personal gift from his own resources and treasury, given in addition to the materials he had already prepared for the sacred building. The gift was part of extensive and costly preparations for the house of God in which neither labor nor expense was spared, and it showed deep devotion to God's house.
David supplied the materials and could counsel and encourage Solomon, but the work of building the temple was assigned by the Lord's command to his son Solomon to build the house for the ark. Seeing his end was near, David committed the costly materials he had collected in trust to the princes of Israel and representative men from all parts of the kingdom, giving them his dying charge. In doing so he told them of his own desire to build and sought their concurrence and support in the great work to be accomplished.
David's extensive preparations and personal gifts set a noble example that the people followed willingly. They belonged to the special freewill offerings for building the temple in Jerusalem that called on the people to support God's service for their own good.
