David Blesses the LORD Before the Offeringsby emmanuel_higgins

1 Chronicles 29:8

And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the LORD, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.

Those who were found to possess precious stones handed them over to the treasure of the house of the Lord for the building of the temple. They gave them by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite, placing them in his care and entrusting them to him for the treasury. These gifts formed part of David's extensive preparations of materials for the temple that Solomon was to build.

David's generous preparations set an example that the people followed, giving willingly from what they had. Their offering was willing, wholehearted and generous, part of a willing, wholehearted offering for the temple. The nobles gave from their own possessions, and their willing gifts expressed loyalty and readiness to serve.

God Himself had provided the riches of the people, and by His Spirit He moved their hearts to give, so that their willingness came from Him. Without His work in their hearts, neither the offerings nor the temple would have resulted. The glory for the offerings and the temple therefore belonged to God, not to the people or to the king. The giving of precious stones placed in the Lord's treasury illustrates special freewill offerings to support God's service, made in addition to regular required contributions.
