1 Chronicles 3:11

Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son,

The verse names three successive kings in David's royal line, Joram followed by Ahaziah followed by Joash. It stands within the long genealogical lists in Chronicles that record names and events. Such lists of names may not seem useful in ordinary reading, yet they form part of the Bible's record of the origin and distribution of peoples and provide material for deeper study. They preserve the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes, giving particular attention to the house of Judah.

Judah's family records were kept with special care. The reason for that care was that Christ was to come through that tribe, from Judah and the family of David. Compared with Matthew 1:8, the verse shows that Matthew's genealogy is not a strict father-to-son record at every step, since it omits kings from the succession. Matthew presents the line of royal inheritance leading to Jesus, whom Joseph's reputed son was entitled to represent as heir to David's throne.
