1 Chronicles 3:2
The third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith: The third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith:
The verse stands in the genealogical lists that fill almost the whole of the first nine chapters of 1 Chronicles, specifically in the long, hard lists of names in chapters 1-3. Its own chapter is made up nearly entirely of names. As part of Chronicles, meaning words of days or records of events, it belongs to a record of names and events. That record runs parallel to Kings and to the last part of Samuel, giving fuller detail of Judah and its kingdom and particular attention to Judah and the priesthood, while Kings deals with the ten-tribe division of the kingdom.
It stands in the prosperous years of David's reign. It belongs to the carefully preserved genealogy of the tribe of Judah through which Christ came, showing the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes amid the long record of names. Judah and Levi are the only two genealogies kept unbroken till the first advent of the Lord, because Jesus was to be of the tribe of Judah and the family of David according to prophecy, while the Aaronic priesthood had to continue till the Jews ceased from being a nation and the priesthood was superseded by that of Christ.
The verse shows that God is particular, that He instructed His people to keep record of genealogies and moved upon His scribes to record them, and that a faithful record of each soul is kept in the books of heaven. Its chapter illustrates that many Bible verses are genealogical records rather than expressed promises.
