1 Chronicles 3:22

And the sons of Shechaniah; Shemaiah: and the sons of Shemaiah; Hattush, and Igeal, and Bariah, and Neariah, and Shaphat, six.

This verse belongs to the genealogical records in Chronicles. It lists the sons of Shemaiah as Hattush, Igeal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat, six in all. Such records preserved hereditary descent, which was needed after the exile to assign land and to resume temple service through those whose duties were inherited.

The record preserves the account of God's children and the integrity of the tribes, especially the carefully kept genealogy of the tribe of Judah through which Christ came. Genealogies are part of Scripture and were preserved for instruction, though they are not as interesting or instructive as the Gospels and other passages and need not be read as often. What seems a long, dull record of names that is often considered dry and uninteresting is valuable and yields rich insights that shed light on it.
