1 Chronicles 3:7

And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

The verse names Nogah, Nepheg, and Japhia in the genealogical record of David's family in the tribe of Judah, belonging to the prosperous years of David's reign. The book containing it deals more fully with the kingdom of Judah, while Kings deals more fully with the northern ten-tribe kingdom, and its first part parallels the last part of Samuel. It stands in the long lists of hard-to-pronounce names in 1 Chronicles 1-3, which are often regarded as dry, tedious, and uninteresting because they largely concern chronology.

The presence of such genealogical lists in Scripture shows they are inspired, even when their value is not immediately apparent. Such genealogies preserved proof of hereditary descent that was needed after the exile for assigning land and for maintaining temple service through the families charged with that duty. Their preservation shows the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes, especially the careful preservation of the genealogy of Judah through which Christ came.

Judah was one of only two tribes whose genealogies were kept unbroken until Christ's first advent, because Jesus was of the tribe of Judah and the family of David according to prophecy, while the genealogy of Levi was kept until the Jews ceased to be a nation and the Aaronic priesthood was superseded by that of Christ. Details like those in the verse interest scholars studying the origin and distribution of races. The verse shows that God is particular, and just as He had His people keep genealogies, a faithful record of each soul is kept in the books of heaven.
