1 Chronicles 4:11

And Chelub the brother of Shuah begat Mehir, which was the father of Eshton.

Chelub the brother of Shuah fathered Mehir, who was the father of Eshton, one link in the family lines of Judah. It belongs to the genealogies that open Chronicles, which supply what was left out of Samuel and Kings and take knowledge of the earlier books of the Bible for granted. Like the rest of these opening records, it centers on Judah and gives scarcely anything about the northern kingdom. It is part of the carefully preserved genealogy of Judah, the tribe through which Christ came, contributing to the record of God's children and the integrity of the tribes.

These long opening lists record the origin and distribution of human families and races, giving scholars material for studying ethnology while preserving spiritual truths within the Bible. The great number of such genealogies exists because after the exile strict legal proof of hereditary descent was needed to assign the land to its hereditary owners and to give the temple service to those whose hereditary duty it was. As part of a genealogy, it shows that God is particular and that a faithful record of every soul is kept in heaven.
