1 Chronicles 4:17

And the sons of Ezra were, Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon: and she bare Miriam, and Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa.

1 Chronicles 4:17 stands in the genealogies that open Chronicles, within the first nine chapters that are filled almost wholly with tribal genealogies recording names, family lineage, and other events. It is one of over five hundred verses in the first twelve chapters of 1 Chronicles that are nearly all names of persons, a simple record of names like the records of Adam's posterity, the descendants of Noah's sons, the posterity of Esau, Jacob, Reuben and Aaron, the courses of the priests, the heads of Israel, the places of Israel's journeyings, the nations, cities and kings taken by Israel, David's mighty men, the lists in Ezra and Nehemiah of those who went up from captivity and those who married strange wives, the genealogy of Christ, and the lists of names in the epistles. It is part of the carefully preserved genealogy of Judah, the tribe through which Christ came, and it records members of Ezra's family.

Those opening genealogies take knowledge of Samuel and Kings for granted and supply what was left out there, giving many new and important facts, while saying scarcely anything about the northern kingdom or about the sinful acts of David and Solomon. The detailed family record exists because after the exile strict proof of hereditary descent was needed to assign the land to its hereditary owners and to restore the temple service to those whose hereditary duty it was. The verse is not an expressed precious promise to God's people, and with more than fifteen hundred such name verses plus verses of threatenings and denunciations against sin, the verses that could be promises are reduced to about thirty thousand out of thirty-one thousand five hundred and thirteen verses in the Bible, proving every verse is not a promise. The careful recording of names and family lines illustrates that God is particular and keeps a faithful record of every soul in heaven.
