1 Chronicles 4:18
And his wife Jehudijah bare Jered the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these are the sons of Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, which Mered took. And his wife Jehudijah bare Jered the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these are the sons of Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, which Mered took.
The verse stands in the genealogies division of Chronicles, one of four divisions alongside the histories of David, of Solomon, and of the remaining kings of Judah. It belongs to the long lists of names in the opening chapters, part of the carefully preserved genealogy of Judah. Judah is the tribe through whom Christ came.
The verse takes knowledge of the preceding books for granted, supplies what was left out of Samuel and Kings, gives a new and important fact, and says nothing about the northern kingdom. Such detailed genealogy existed because the records were needed after the exile to prove hereditary descent when the land was assigned to its hereditary owners and the temple service was taken up by those whose hereditary duty it was.
The long lists can contain material of interest to scholars studying the origin and distribution of races as well as spiritual truth, showing that genealogies contain items of interest within their lists of names. The genealogical records show that God is particular and keeps a faithful record of each person in the books of heaven.
