1 Chronicles 4:2

And Reaiah the son of Shobal begat Jahath; and Jahath begat Ahumai, and Lahad. These are the families of the Zorathites.

This verse belongs to the genealogies in Chronicles, a list of names and families recording that Reaiah the son of Shobal fathered Jahath, that Jahath fathered Ahumai and Lahad, and that these were the families of the Zorathites. Those genealogies preserve the records of God's people and the integrity of the tribes, with the genealogy of Judah carefully preserved, and Christ came through that tribe. Such family records supplied proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile to assign land to its hereditary owners and to restore temple service to those whose families had hereditary duties.

Its genealogical record preserves the origin and distribution of peoples, and such records can interest scholars studying the ancestry of races, while the Bible also contains spiritual truth along the path of that study. Its particular record of people and families shows that God's record is particular, like the faithful records kept in heaven. The verse is simply a record of names of persons and families, not an expressed precious promise to God's people, belonging to twelve chapters of 1 Chronicles containing over five hundred verses that are nearly all names of persons, part of more than fifteen hundred verses of mere names in the Bible that cannot be counted as distinct promises.
