1 Chronicles 4:23

These were the potters, and those that dwelt among plants and hedges: there they dwelt with the king for his work.

In Chronicles the verse stands within the genealogies, which form one distinct division of the book alongside the histories of David, of Solomon, and of the remaining kings of Judah. Those extended family records were preserved with care because they were needed after the exile. When the people returned, such records made it possible to assign the land again to its hereditary owners. They also made it possible to restore the service of the temple to those whose hereditary duty it was to perform it.
