1 Chronicles 4:25

Shallum his son, Mibsam his son, Mishma his son.

The line runs through three successive generations, from Shallum to his son Mibsam to Mibsam's son Mishma. It stands in the genealogies division of Chronicles, as one link in the tribal and family tables traced back to earliest times. More specifically, it preserves a link in the genealogy of Simeon.

The books of Chronicles take for granted a knowledge of the preceding books of the Bible, supply many new and important facts left out of Samuel and Kings, say scarcely anything about the northern kingdom, and follow the line of Judah. The tables gave strict legal proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile, when the land came to be assigned to its hereditary owners and the temple service to be taken up by those whose hereditary duty it was. The genealogies preserve the records of God's people and the integrity of Israel's tribes, and this chapter also carefully preserves Judah's genealogy, through which Christ came.

The long genealogical lists preserve information about the origin and distribution of peoples and can interest those who study them. Its inclusion among the genealogies illustrates that God is particular and that a faithful record of every soul is kept in heaven.
