1 Chronicles 4:26

And the sons of Mishma; Hamuel his son, Zacchur his son, Shimei his son.

The verse belongs to the genealogies that form the opening division of Chronicles. Those genealogies trace the ancestry of tribes and families back to the earliest times. Within that hereditary descent it records one link, taking knowledge of the preceding books for granted while supplying new and important facts left out of Samuel and Kings. Such detailed genealogies met the need felt after the exile for strict legal proof of hereditary descent, in order to assign the land to its hereditary owners and to restore the temple service to those whose hereditary duty it was.

The long lists of names record the origins and distribution of peoples for those who study them. They illustrate that not every part of the Bible is equally interesting or valuable to every reader.

As part of a genealogy, the verse shows that God's people kept detailed records of family lines. It shows that God is particular about each person. A faithful record of every soul is kept in the books of heaven.
