1 Chronicles 6:14

And Azariah begat Seraiah, and Seraiah begat Jehozadak,

This verse stands within the long genealogical lists of 1 Chronicles 4 to 19, which record names and events, deal largely with chronology, and give particular attention to Judah and the priesthood, though often viewed as dry and uninteresting. Within that list it records Azariah as the father of Seraiah and Seraiah as the father of Jehozadak, placing them in the high-priestly family line descended from Aaron. Seraiah was Joshua's grandfather, and Ezra also belonged to Seraiah's family, making Ezra Joshua's uncle or cousin.

The fuller list including Azariah, Seraiah, and Jehozadak contains several generations that Ezra omits when tracing his own priestly descent to Aaron by selected ancestors, illustrating the Hebrew habit of compressing a genealogical series by dropping intermediate links and calling a man the son of a third- or fourth-generation ancestor to show relation to a remote ancestor. Such genealogical records were preserved with exceeding care to prove hereditary descent and preserve the integrity of the tribes, a proof needed after the exile to assign land and restore temple service to those whose family line gave them that duty. The same careful preservation guarded the prerogatives and privileges of the priesthood, the fulfillment of ancient prophecies and historic promises, and especially the Messianic hopes.

The genealogies of Judah and Levi were preserved unbroken until Christ's first advent, with Levi's line connected to the priesthood that continued until it was superseded by Christ's priesthood. The fuller list must be considered in calculating chronology from genealogies, since much more time may have elapsed than a compressed series suggests. The genealogy shows that God keeps a faithful record of each person and remembers people by name, which is a comfort when someone feels forgotten or unsuccessful.
