1 Chronicles 6:16

The sons of Levi; Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.

The verse names three sons of Levi, Gershom, Kohath, and Merari, set within a long genealogy. That genealogy belongs to the records in Chronicles that preserved proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile. Such proof was required for assigning land and for maintaining the temple service.

By keeping the names of people who would otherwise be forgotten, the list gives comfort in the assurance that God remembers each person. That remembrance extends even to those who feel like failures.
