1 Chronicles 6:31

And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest.

1 Chronicles 6:31 belongs to the 1 Chronicles 4-6 portion, which is to be read together and compared with the parallel history in Samuel that gives much the same account except for the genealogies. It stands within one of the long lists of names in Chronicles. It shows David setting men over appointed service, arranging the sanctuary's service of song and other duties after the ark had come to rest.

This arranging was part of David's remodeling of sanctuary worship and regulating of the priesthood as the faithful leader God had promised. David's work in organizing men, including the division of his armies, is to be studied for his virtues and his mistakes, for God's mercy and guidance, and for the reason why men were truly mighty. The lists of names show that God remembers each person by name even when they have been forgotten for thousands of years, which can comfort those who feel like failures.
