1 Chronicles 6:34

The son of Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Eliel, the son of Toah,

Elkanah is set in a priestly line of descent through Jeroham, Eliel and Toah. The verse belongs to the long genealogical lists in Chronicles, especially 1 Chronicles 4-19, which record names, events and chronology and give particular attention to Judah and the priesthood. Those lists of names are usually considered dry, tedious and uninteresting, and their value may not be immediately clear to every reader. The records preserve hereditary descent needed to establish family claims and duties, including service in the temple, and they show the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes. The careful recording of family lines reflects that God keeps a faithful record of each person.
