1 Chronicles 6:36

The son of Elkanah, the son of Joel, the son of Azariah, the son of Zephaniah,

This verse belongs to the long genealogical lists in Chronicles that record names, family lines, and successive generations. Within that larger record it stands in the genealogy of Levi, while the book gives special attention to Judah and to the priesthood. The unbroken genealogies of Judah and Levi were preserved because Jesus came from Judah and the family of David, and because the Aaronic priesthood continued until it was superseded by Christ's priesthood.

The presence of such long lists of names does not make the Bible uninspired or without value. Rather, this kind of genealogical material can interest scholars and invite study, including study of the origin and distribution of races.

The care given to these genealogies shows that God keeps a faithful record of every soul. The lists show that He remembers people individually by name even when they have been forgotten by others.
