1 Chronicles 6:40

The son of Michael, the son of Baaseiah, the son of Malchiah,

1 Chronicles 6:40 belongs to the genealogical lists in Chronicles, to the extended record of names in 1 Chronicles 4-19 that deals largely with chronology and records names among the various tribes. Those lists give particular attention to the priesthood and the house of Judah, and this verse stands within the Levitical genealogy. Such genealogical records were needed after the exile to establish hereditary descent for assigning land and maintaining temple service.

The records were kept carefully, and their preservation shows the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes. As part of a long, tedious list of names often considered dry and uninteresting, the verse is illuminated by beautiful gems cropping out within the record. Its inclusion illustrates that inspired Scripture contains details that do not interest or benefit every reader equally, yet such material can engage scholars and reward careful study, because the Bible is intended for people of different capacities and interests.

The preservation of these lists shows that God remembers each person, even those forgotten by others for thousands of years, and keeps a faithful record of every soul in heaven. This remembrance gives comfort to those who feel downhearted or like failures.
