1 Chronicles 6:43

The son of Jahath, the son of Gershom, the son of Levi.

Jahath is identified as the son of Gershom and the grandson of Levi, placing him within the Levite genealogy. The verse belongs to the lists and genealogies of the tribes in the first nine chapters of Chronicles, records of names and events that give more attention to the house of Judah and the priesthood than the books of Kings do. These genealogical records established hereditary descent and the duties connected with temple service.

The preservation of this family record of Levi through Gershom to Jahath shows the care taken to maintain the identity and integrity of Israel's tribes. Though part of long lists of names that may be hard to read, the verse shows that God remembers each person. That remembrance brings comfort to those who feel forgotten or like failures.
