1 Chronicles 6:45

The son of Hashabiah, the son of Amaziah, the son of Hilkiah,

The son of Hashabiah, the son of Amaziah, the son of Hilkiah is one successive link in the priestly genealogy of Levi. It stands within the genealogical lists of the early chapters of Chronicles, the long record of names in 1 Chronicles 4-19 that records the tribes and is largely concerned with chronology. That record gives particular attention to Judah and the priesthood. Such genealogical records established hereditary descent and identified those entitled to their land and temple-service duties after the exile.

The preservation of these family lines kept the records of God's children and maintained the integrity of the tribes, with special care given to preserving the genealogy of Judah through whom Christ came. The genealogies of Levi, like those of Judah, remained unbroken until Jesus' first advent, and Levi's line mattered because the Aaronic priesthood continued until it was superseded by Christ's priesthood. Though part of a long, tedious list of names that may not seem equally interesting or valuable to everyone, it belongs to an inspired book that engages scholars and rewards study.

The careful keeping of these genealogies shows that God remembers each person who lived and passed away by name, even people long forgotten by others. It shows also that a faithful record of every soul is kept in the books of heaven. By showing that personal remembrance, these lists can comfort those who feel forgotten or like failures.
