1 Chronicles 6:5

And Abishua begat Bukki, and Bukki begat Uzzi,

Abishua fathered Bukki and Bukki fathered Uzzi in the genealogy of Levi, forming one link in the full priestly line from Aaron onward in 1 Chronicles 6:3-15. This stands within the opening genealogies of Chronicles, especially 1 Chronicles 4-19, which record names and other matters dealing largely with chronology. That opening work gives particular attention to Judah and Levi and the priesthood.

The presence of this verse among long lists of names shows that the genealogies are part of Scripture even when their value or interest is not immediately clear. They are often called dry and uninteresting, yet the Bible thus includes material that engages study of the origins and distribution of peoples alongside spiritual truths throughout its pages. Amid such tedious lists beautiful gems crop out to illuminate them.

Comparison with Ezra's tracing of his own descent to Aaron, which omits several generations found in this priestly list, shows that Hebrew genealogies often drop intermediate links and call a man the son of a third- or fourth-generation ancestor by naming only selected ancestors. A writer aiming only to show relation to a remote ancestor need not unroll the chain at full length. Chronology calculated from such a compressed series must therefore allow much more time than a complete reading would suggest.

The catalogues were kept with exceeding care and carefully preserved because they prove hereditary descent, preserve the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes, and guard priestly prerogatives and the fulfillment of prophecy and promise and Messianic hope. After the exile they were needed for assigning land and establishing who had hereditary duties in temple service. The genealogy of Judah was kept especially carefully because Christ came through Judah, and Levi's genealogy was kept unbroken until Christ's first advent, when the Aaronic priesthood was superseded by Christ's priesthood. Such carefully preserved records show that God keeps a faithful record of each soul in heaven and remembers each person by name in these lists of Judah and Levi, even people whose lives and deeds have been forgotten by others.
