1 Chronicles 6:54
Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot. Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot.
The verse belongs to the extended lists of names and places in Chronicles, forming part of twelve chapters of over five hundred verses that are nearly all personal names. More particularly it belongs to the record of the sons of Levi, giving the dwelling places, castles and coasts of the Aaronite families of the Kohathites as assigned by lot. That genealogical and territorial character defines its setting rather than any promissory character.
The word lot here denotes the portion assigned to these families as determined by lot. It illustrates the Old Testament use in which lots decide an allotment or decision, with the outcome understood as determined by Providence. In this sense it does not denote inherited property or a distinct inherited region, and therefore does not support the sense of inherited property proposed for the lot in Daniel 12:13.
Though such lists may be difficult to understand and seem to have little value, their presence does not make them less inspired, and they contain deep material that repays careful study. The families it names belong to people whose lives may be forgotten by others but are remembered by God. It is part of that genealogical and territorial record rather than an expressed promise, much less an exceeding great and precious promise, showing that not every verse is a distinct promise and that threatenings of wrath, denunciations of evil, and verses and whole chapters of mere names must be subtracted from the thirty-one thousand five hundred and thirteen verses of the Bible before counting promises.
