1 Chronicles 6:57

And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of Judah, namely, Hebron, the city of refuge, and Libnah with her suburbs, and Jattir, and Eshtemoa, with their suburbs,

1 Chronicles 6:57 belongs to the long lists of names, places, and tribal genealogies that occupy the first nine chapters of Chronicles, with interesting matters interspersed among them. In the Jewish arrangement Chronicles is one book in the third division called Words or Acts of Days, meaning minutes of events, lists of names and the like; in Greek it is called Things omitted or passed over, and its common name comes from the Latin Chronica. Compared with Kings, Chronicles gives much more attention and detail to the house of Judah and to the priesthood.

The record containing the verse illustrates the preservation of Israel's records and tribal integrity, carefully preserving the line of Judah through which Christ came. The presence of such lists does not make the chapter uninspired or without value; though they may not interest or benefit every reader equally, they can reward careful study and add to knowledge of peoples and their history. As part of a long list of names and places, the verse brings comfort because God remembers every person even when people have long forgotten them.
