1 Chronicles 6:62

And to the sons of Gershom throughout their families out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

The allotment described is that the families descended from Gershom were given thirteen cities taken from the territories of Issachar and Asher and Naphtali and Manasseh in Bashan. It stands within the genealogical records and long lists of Chronicles, in particular the twelve opening chapters of 1 Chronicles containing over five hundred verses that are nearly all names of persons, a simple record of family names and allotted cities. Those genealogical records were needed after the exile to establish hereditary claims to land and hereditary duties in temple service.

The genealogies of the chapter preserve the records of God's people and their inheritance and the integrity of the tribes. As part of that preserving record, there is comfort in the assurance that God remembers individuals even when people have forgotten them. The verse is not an expressed precious promise to God's people, showing that not every verse is a promise, since genealogies and other lists of names totaling more than fifteen hundred verses, together with threatenings and denunciations of wrath against sin, reduce the verses that could be counted as promises well below the total of thirty-one thousand five hundred and thirteen verses in the Bible.
