1 Chronicles 6:71
Unto the sons of Gershom were given out of the family of the half tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, and Ashtaroth with her suburbs: Unto the sons of Gershom were given out of the family of the half tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, and Ashtaroth with her suburbs:
The opening chapters of Chronicles, through chapter nine, preserve records of events and lists and genealogies of the various tribes, giving much more attention to the house of Judah and the priesthood than is found in the books of Kings. Within that larger collection this verse belongs to the list of the sons of Levi and the places assigned to them. Twelve chapters of 1 Chronicles contain over five hundred verses that are nearly all names of persons, and this verse is one of them and one of more than fifteen hundred such name verses in the Bible.
Detailed lists of names and places of this kind may not show their value immediately to every reader, yet such details do not leave the Bible uninspired, since it holds material suited to readers of different interests and capacities, including scholars who trace the origins and distribution of peoples. It is a verse of names rather than an expressed precious promise to God's people, and verses of this kind reduce the number of verses that can be counted as distinct promises within the thirty-one thousand five hundred and thirteen verses of the whole Bible. Its place among carefully preserved genealogical records shows that God is particular and keeps a faithful record of every soul in the books of heaven. The lists comfort those who feel forgotten, because God remembers each person by name even when generations of people have forgotten them.
