1 Chronicles 6:79

Kedemoth also with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs:

1 Chronicles 6:79 belongs to the lengthy lists and genealogies of the various tribes given in the first nine chapters of Chronicles. Those long genealogical lists name the descendants of Judah and Levi and their towns.

Within Chronicles chapters 4 through 19, which deal largely with chronology and long tedious records of names, the verse is grouped with 1 Chronicles 7 and Psalm 149 as the Monday June 1 portion. It shares in showing the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes. Special care is given to the genealogy of the tribe of Judah through whom Christ came, where every now and then a beautiful gem crops out illuminating the record.

These lists show that God remembers each person by name, even people forgotten by others. That remembrance can comfort those who feel unsuccessful or downhearted. That such lists may seem hard to understand or of little value to some readers does not make them uninspired. Such material can engage scholars and reward study, while the Bible serves people of different abilities and interests.
